♥ Fiction – What if…?
This was his confession
what if I tell you that you stole my heart?
Her reply was
an eye for an eye, you can take mine…
A few months later he asked
what if I tell you that I want to spend the rest of my life with you?
She replied
til deaths do us apart…
Doesn't everything just sound so sweet at the beginning? Where things are just so perfect that you'd wish that was the end of the story as they live happily ever after? Life clearly isn't that simple.
Dylan walked Ella to her door, his eyes sad. He has tried to talk to her on their way back but her cold glare had stopped him. Dylan had gotten accepted in a university of his dream, but it means moving miles away from Ella for at least 4 years. Ella, of course, didn't want to be separated from him for such a long time. When he told her the news over dinner, and that he's leaving in a week, she felt a splinter of pain shooting through her heart. For the rest of the night she was quiet… emotionless. She just couldn't believe that he'd decided to leave her without even discussing it in the first place, she felt betrayed and angry. On their way back, they walked past a construction site with Ella in front and Dylan trailing behind, wishing he could do or say something other than just watching her back…
At the front door of Ella's place sat a small pot of lavender that Dylan gave her at Valentine's Day, the purple flowers had draped down as if they could feel their pain too. She picked it up and turned around, handing it to him. Dylan looked confused and shocked, he looked at her with begging eyes, but she did not give in from being angry. She was really hoping that he'd stay, that he'd change his mind about going to that damn university right now. After a long silent Dylan slowly took the small pot of plant and opened his mouth, breaking the silence
"can I hug you for the last time? Just 1 minute"
"1 minute isn't going to change anything…" she said emotionlessly, giving up the thought that he'll stay here for her. She turned around and paused for a moment, before inserting the security pins that unlocked her front door, but she did not turn around to look at him again.
Dylan dragged his feet along the ground as he walked out of her front yard; his mind is now completely blank. He turned his head to look at Ella's place again and paused, the lights now on. What a warm looking place, he thought. In a split second, a loud crash slammed away the silent night. It was the sound from a piece of iron panel that had fallen off from the crane at the construction site. A worker from the site heard the crash and rushed to the scene, but it was all too late. The iron panel that is more than 5000 kg in mass has crushed Dylan's body, his blood spattered out like blooming cherry blossoms. He was dead.
Dylan's life was gone within split of a second, like a fallen shooting star.
What if Ella had let him give her a hug for one minute?
What if Dylan hadn't turned around to look at the warm light coming from Ella's house?
Too many "what ifs" but no answers… Life and death, love and hate… all within a flash.
