♥ Fiction – Golden heart
Lizzy and Greg knew each other since they were little and had been dating for 2 years now. On a day when they went shopping, Lizzy's eyes were caught by a golden necklace sitting inside the displaying window of a jewellery shop. The necklace had a heart shaped pendent and a small jewel embedded in the middle. Lizzy's eyes were locked on it, not wanting to walk away. Greg saw that and felt his flat wallet inside his jean's pocket. Gently, he pulled Catherine away from the store…
A couple of months later, Lizzy celebrated her 20th birthday. On her party, Greg gulped down countless bottles of alcohol and finally pulled out her birthday present. It was in a small square box, delicately wrapped with purple paper and silver ribbon. Lizzy unwrapped the box and opened it; inside sat the gleaming gold necklace that she saw the other day. She gave Greg a kiss on the cheek in front of all the guests and was about to put the necklace around her neck. Greg suddenly opened his mouth "but that necklace… is made…. Of copper..." his voice was small, but everyone in the room heard him. Lizzy's face turned bright red; she quickly shoved the necklace back into her pocket and shouted "c'mon! Let's drink!" until the party is over, she didn't look at Greg even once.
A couple months later, Lizzy met Kevin. Kevin told Lizzy that he's got nothing but money, and bought her mountains of golden jewellery: rings, bracelets, anklets, earrings and etc. This… was enough for him to completely captivate Lizzy's heart that was full of vanity. They quickly rented out an apartment and started living together. Kevin gives Lizzy whatever she wants, for Lizzy it was the happiest time of her life. She was glad that she had made a good decision between Greg and Kevin. But her happiness didn't last long… when she realised that she's pregnant with Kevin's child, Kevin disappeared. After the abortion, the landlady repeatedly chased after her for rent. She had no choice but to bring out all of her golden jewellery to the pawn shop. As she unwillingly placed the sparkling jewelleries on the counter, the shopkeeper looked at her strangely "what are you doing bringing so much gilded metal here?" Lizzy stood there dumbfounded, she can't believe it. But then, the shopkeeper's eyes suddenly lit up, he dug through the pile of fake gold and pulled out a necklace from the bottom "this one is real gold, it might worth a bit" he said. Lizzy's head snapped up, that was the necklace Greg gave her, the one he said was fake gold! The shopkeeper fiddled with the heart in his hands and asked "so how much do you want for it?"
Lizzy snatched that necklace from the shopkeeper and ran out of the shop.
In a corner down the road, Lizzy's tears rained down on the golden necklace…
